Wellfound is a job marketplace and recruiting platform built specifically for startups, formerly known as AngelList Talent. Candidates come to it looking for startup and tech roles, and companies use it to post jobs, source profiles and manage applicants. Its defining convention is transparency: listings show salary and equity ranges up front, which is unusual on general job boards and is a large part of why candidates use it.
What you can actually do with it
Employers get a job board, a light applicant tracker and optional sourcing help in one account:
- Post roles at no cost. Job posting is free, including multiple open roles, which makes it a low-risk channel to add alongside whatever else you are running.
- Publish salary and equity ranges. The platform requires compensation on every listing, so you filter out mismatched candidates before the first call rather than after it.
- Build a company profile. Team, funding stage, tech stack and culture information sit alongside your jobs, which matters when candidates are choosing between unknown companies.
- Track applicants in a built-in ATS. Review, message and move candidates through stages without buying separate recruiting software – basic, but adequate for a small hiring pipeline.
- Message candidates directly. Founders and hiring managers talk to applicants themselves, which suits early-stage teams with no recruiter.
- Search and source proactively. Paid tiers add AI-assisted sourcing across a large candidate pool, and a managed option where Wellfound recruiters run the search for you.
Who it fits best
Wellfound is aimed squarely at startups: seed to Series B companies hiring engineers, designers, product people and early go-to-market staff. It works best when the founder or an early employee is doing the hiring personally and can respond quickly, because the appeal to candidates is direct contact rather than a recruiter funnel.
It is a weaker fit if you are hiring outside tech and startup roles, or if you are a large established company – candidates on the platform are typically there because they want startup work, equity and remote flexibility. Local service businesses, retail, trades and most non-technical admin roles will get better results from a general job board.
Things worth knowing before you commit
- Free posting means high applicant volume. Popular roles, especially remote ones, can attract a large number of applications, many of them poorly matched. Budget time for screening.
- The ATS is functional, not full-featured. If you are hiring at any volume you will likely still want a proper applicant tracking system; treat this as a sourcing channel that happens to include basic tracking.
- Compensation transparency is mandatory. If your company is not ready to publish salary ranges, this is not the right platform, and posting a vague range tends to hurt response rates.
- Candidate mix skews remote and technical. That is a strength for a distributed software team and a limitation for anyone hiring on-site in a specific city.
- The paid layers are where the cost is. Sourcing and managed recruiting are separate commercial products, so understand what is included before you scale up from free posting.
Alternatives to compare it against
For general hiring across all functions, LinkedIn Recruiter and Indeed reach a far broader audience, though at higher cost and with less startup-specific self-selection. If you want an applicant tracking system first and a job board second, tools like Workable or Greenhouse are built for structured hiring processes and post out to multiple boards. For technical roles specifically, developer-focused boards and community job boards can produce a smaller but better-targeted pool. Many startups run Wellfound in parallel with one of these rather than choosing between them.
